How to change a halogen light bulb?

Just had a load of little halogen downlighters fitted in my kitchen, and one has blown already. My problem is how to access the tiny bulb behind the glass. It seems to be held on with a very strong band of wire, which comes out in a triangle over one edge of the glass and the two ends of the wire come slightly across the glass on the opposite edge. Have tried prying the wire off at both these access points to no avail %26amp; don't want to break the glass. Is there a magic way of changing these bulbs??Any help appreciated.How to change a halogen light bulb?
Ignore the instructions on touching and turning the lamp to remove it. Since you have a securing clip it is unlikely that you have lamps which turn to fit and remove, I have never seen such fittings. Those lamps are called GU10. You will have GX5.3,- 12 volt 20/35/50 watt lamps which have two pins, these lamps pull straight out, if the lamp is so far back that you cant grip it, you should have been giver a little black suction cup by the installer to pull it out. If not you may be able to wiggle it out with a thin blade. As far as touching the lamps goes, go ahead, there is no risk of fire or anything else. This reply is confusing the fact that you should not touch a BARE halogen lamp as oil from your skin will stain the glass. The bulbs that I suggest you have are protected by the outer glass. I have fitted thousands of these fitting over the years, and replaced even more lamps!



In the unlikely event that you have a peanut shaped bulb behind a glass, it will be an M50 lamp which also 'pulls' out and touching should be avoided as it is a 'bare' lamp.How to change a halogen light bulb?
I just changed my first halogen bulb, and like David, was unsure how to get the glass out of the way. It turns out that the only way in is to remove the metal ring (it is a spring) and then the glass falls right out. Removing and replacing the bulb was easy.

To remove the bulbs I just pushed the two metal springs together, while holding the bulb, allowing the ring to pop out slightly and then fully remove. To replace the bulb, just insert the two metal pointers at the end of the bulb into the tiny copper inserts in the socket. Push hard to fit.

Most electrical supply houses have plastic tweezers plier things that grab the bulb, this does two things safly removes the bulb and keeps the oils from your fingers off the bulb
HOLD BOTH SIDES OF BULB TAKING CARE NOT TO TOUCH THE GLASS, PRESS IN GENTLY AND TURN TO LEFT, BULB WILL EASILY COME OUT. TO REPLACE TURN BULB UNTIL IT CLIPS IN TO PLACE PRESS IN AND TURN TO RIGHT TOSECURE. THESE BULBS ARE EXPENSIVE BUT CAN BE BOUGHT AT POUND STORES FOR TWO PER POUND, AND THEY LAST JUST AS LONG. JOHN
The wire is sprung,hold the 2 ends that come slightly across the glass and squeeze together the wire should then come out be careful as this also hold the glass in plac. The bulb will then iether pull or twist out. Good luck

After you get the bulb out, you'll have to put a new one in. Please DO NOT TOUCH THE GLASS on this new bulb with your fingers. This is a FIRE RISK. The oil from your fingers can cause the intense light to refocus and, just like using your magnifying glass to burn a leaf, the same thing can happen to your ceiling, furniture, etc. Use gloves (or at least tissues or a paper towel when handling the new bulb.
